Youngest House member: It feels good to get carded
Rep. Patrick Murphy has no problem with folks requiring evidence of his age.
While being honored Tuesday night at the New Leaders Council’s (NLC) 40 Under 40 Awards at U Street’s Local 16 bar, the 29-year-old Florida Democrat cracked, “I’ll tell you, it felt good getting carded on the way up here.”
The youngest member of the 113th Congress is used to being on the receiving end of quips about his youthfulness, saying, “They joke and call me ‘the kid’ here and there, but I think it’s fun.”
Roughly 200 people packed the District hotspot for the awards ceremony held by the NLC, a nonprofit that trains progressive political entrepreneurs.
The group also recognized President Obama’s outgoing speechwriter, Jon Favreau. The wordsmith, who is set to step down from his White House post on Friday, says he’s getting away from Washington for just a little while, telling ITK, “I will take a break for a little bit, have some vacation.”
But at 31, retirement isn’t exactly in the cards for the writing whiz. Favreau reveals he plans to start a consulting firm with a colleague and is considering dabbling in screenwriting.
Calling Obama the “best boss I’ll ever have,” he says parting from some of his “best friends” will be bittersweet, “That I will miss very much — just about every day.”
