Sen. Sherrod Brown: My wife likes my gravelly voice
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) says his wife digs his raspy voice, despite the way it might raise eyebrows with strangers.
Brown joked about his coarse tone of voice on Tuesday during a speech to the Federation of American Hospitals.
“This is my real voice,” the lawmaker said to laughs. “I don’t smoke. I just talk like this.”
He recalled a time when a stranger criticized the way he spoke, eliciting a sharp response from Brown’s wife, Connie Schultz.
“My wife and I were at a reception at the Democratic convention,” Brown said. “As I begin to speak, this guy who my wife had never seen before turns to her and said, ‘I hate that guy’s voice … When he speaks, it’s like fingernails on a blackboard. I can’t stand to listen to him.’ "
But his spouse stood by her man — and then some.
“He leans in and she says, ‘I really like it when he wakes me up in the middle of the night and says, ‘I love you, baby.’ ”
“True story,” Brown said to applause. “My wife is fast on her feet.”
