'Star Trek' star praises Hawaii senator

By Judy Kurtz - 03/11/13 04:10 PM ET

Sen. Mazie Hirono has a fan in George Takei.

The outspoken “Star Trek” alum voiced his support for the Hawaii Democrat Monday on Facebook.

Takei posted a photo of Hirono along with a quote from the lawmaker, who won the Senate seat vacated by the retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka (D) last year: “I bring quadruple diversity to the Senate. I’m a woman. I’ll be the first Asian woman ever to be elected to the U.S. Senate. I’m an immigrant. I’m a Buddhist. When I said this at a gathering they said, “Yes, but are you gay?’ I said, ‘Nobody’s perfect.’”

The 75-year-old actor and gay rights activist wrote alongside the photo, “Now that’s a great kind of ally, and a refreshing new voice.”

Takei has a massive online following. The entertainer, who played Hikaru Sulu on the popular T.V. series, has more than 3.6 million Facebook followers.
