Super Bowl Raven interns for congressman

By Judy Kurtz - 03/22/13 03:32 PM ET

In what appears to be a first for Rep. Elijah Cummings’s office, one of his interns sports a Super Bowl ring.

Baltimore Ravens player Torrey Smith tells the official Ravens’s website that he is finishing up a month-long internship for the Maryland Democrat.

Just because he’s a star athlete didn’t mean Smith got off easy in his internship, telling the site, “I was handling files, reading letters, relaying them, typing up what sponsors say, printing stuff.“ He added, “I was the office guy.”

Smith says he spent most of his interning days in Cummings’s district office, but made a few trips to the Rayburn House Office Building. The wide receiver on the 2013 Super Bowl-winning team says he was inspired to join the congressman’s office because he wanted to try something new during the football offseason.

Smith says he learned from the internship — which ends later this month — that “there are really politicians that do a lot for their community – [Cummings] being one of them.”

The 24-year-old pigskin pro exclaims, “You can literally call your congressman and any issue you have, they can basically point you in the right direction if they can’t help you. I never really knew that.”

Cummings’s office did not return ITK’s request for comment.

UPDATE (5:40 p.m.): Cummings tells ITK in an email, “It was a pleasure having Torrey Smith intern with us, and I was glad that I could offer him the opportunity."

The lawmaker added, “Torrey was eager to learn about the legislative process and was treated no differently than any of our other interns — all of whom play a meaningful and important role in helping me serve the constituents of Maryland’s 7th District. I hope that this experience gave him the perspective he sought and I thank him for his outstanding work.”
