“I was scared to death,” Schmidt, 61, recalled. “I heard the first explosion and saw the second one. You could see the smoke rising.”

Schmidt’s sister, who was running about 26 minutes behind the former House member, along with a cousin and a friend who were also running in the marathon, were all unharmed.

While talking to the T.V. station Monday via phone from a Boston hotel room Schmidt said, “I am still very nervous and upset.”
