Mikulski's advice to women: Don't let your height stop you

The longest-serving woman in the history Congress talked about the positive influences in her life: her parents and the nuns who taught her at Catholic schools. "Nuns get a bad rap," she noted.

Mikulski, who stands at 4'11", also noted her height never stopped her.

When asked what advice she would give her 20-year-old self, she responded: "It doesn't matter that you're not 5'4". I wanted to be 5'4" all my life."

She also talked about the monthly bipartisan dinners that the female senators hold, which she started with then-Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-Texas.). Hutchinson and Mikulski were the only female senators at the time and wanted to get to know each other better.

"We would get together once a month, and we would give it a try, for friendship and fellowship. And it started these monthly dinners, and it's now been 15 years," she said.

The monthly dinner moved to the White House on Tuesday night, where the women senators dined with President Obama.

"Boy did we dish it up," she said.

Also spotted at the dinner: Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) and former Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.).
