The style icon and Democratic fundraiser also praised the former New York senator for her style choices throughout the decades, noting that Oscar de la Renta — who was being honored at the event — had designed many of her iconic looks.

“She always looked entirely appropriate wherever she was and nearly always in Oscar,” Wintour said.

Wintour was among the top financiers of President Obama's re-election campaign in 2012, credited with raising more than half a million dollars for the president.

She hosted a $15,000-per-plate fundraiser for the president with actress Gwyneth Paltrow and designer Tom Ford in London, and a $40,000-per-plate dinner at the home of actress Sarah Jessica Parker during the event, according to the Sunlight Foundation. Obama attended that reception, along with another Wintour event at the home of Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein.

Clinton has not yet said whether she plans to run in 2016, although polling data suggests she would be the early favorite for both the Democratic nomination and the White House.
