Sen. Carper talks baseball at Homeland Security Committee hearing

The American League shut out their National League opponents in a 3-0 victory in the 2013 All-Star Game at New York’s Citi Field. It was the first win for the American League at the annual event in four years. After Maurer confirmed the American League’s win, Carper grinned slightly.

"I'm an American League fan — a huge Tigers fan,” he exclaimed.

Carper quipped that although he’s “not a big Yankees fan” and the New York team’s Mariano Rivera was named the game’s MVP, “What a good night it was for baseball and for folks on our side of the aisle,” referring to his American League allegiance.

Before getting started with the hearing’s proceedings, Carper concluded with a smile, “We worry here about nuclear options and trying to make sure the place doesn’t have a meltdown. But the real important stuff is what’s going on at baseball stadiums around the country.”
