Lawmaker mourns pet cat

Rep. John Yarmuth is mourning the death of his pet cat - and even giving the feline a proper sendoff, complete with a formal obituary.

The Kentucky Democrat wrote Tuesday on his Facebook page: "Congressman Yarmuth is sad to announce the passing of Rice, his family's cat, at age 13."

But Yarmuth doesn't stop there when it comes to his dearly departed furry friend. "Rice was a dedicated family man, close adviser, and friend to virtually any visitor to the Yarmuth home," he writes.

And Rice appears to have been one accomplished kitty: "He was winner of the Humane Society of the United States' 2011 Congressional Pet Photo Contest and was recognized as an Elder Statescat."

Yarmuth notes, "Rice was generous with his affection and most content resting on the lap of his Congressman. His photo has long served as the wallpaper on many electronic devices."

As the obituary states, Rice is survived by the lawmaker and his family, as well as his "tabby companion," Whiskey.
