When asked by Douglass whether FLOTUS was a tough boss, Tchen replied because of their shared past as lawyers “the two of us are a lot alike.” She explained that Obama “will not go out and talk about something unless she really understands it and unless what the message is is authentic to herself.”

Tchen said if policy educators don’t “break it down” for the West Wing resident, “she will challenge them. I don’t see that as tough at all — that’s just smart.”

The mother of two, who also serves as executive director of the White House Council on Women and Girls, had some advice for females looking to excel in the workplace. “Women have a harder time self-promoting” than men do, she said, but added it’s necessary in order to get ahead.

She exclaimed, “The only person in charge of your career is you.”
