Spintharus barackobamai, S. michelleobamaae and S. berniesandersi are among the latest-identified species of spiders. Spider experts and students at the University of Vermont identified and named the new species, Sci-News reported Tuesday.


“In naming these spiders … the students and I wanted to honor people who stood up for both human rights and warned about climate change — leaders and artists who promoted sensible approaches for a better world,” University of Vermont professor Ingi Agnarsson said, according to Sci-News.

Others species like S. davidattenboroughi were named after figures like famed British naturalist David Attenborough. Celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and David Bowie also got a nod with S. davidbowiei and S. leonardodicaprioi.

This isn't the first time former President Obama has had a new species named after him — scientists named a fish after him last year when it was discovered in a national monument that Obama had recently expanded.
