Congressman Duncan loves having breakfast food for dinner

By Judy Kurtz

If you’re having Rep. Jeff Duncan over for dinner and stumped on what to serve, eggs and bacon are the way to go.

The South Carolina Republican tells ITK he absolutely “loves” breakfast food for dinner.

The congressman will even venture out of the house to get his breakfast fix. Duncan tweeted Sunday that he was out on the town with his wife, Melody, writing, “Waffle House dinner with my bride! Love breakfast food for supper!”

Duncan confirms to ITK he’s a “huge” fan of the greasy spoon, Southern-based chain. “My [favorite] is cheese eggs, bacon, hash browns, and raisin toast with coffee or water,” the House member tells us in an email.

Elizabeth Kucinich keeps up the vegan battle in the House cafeteria

By Judy Kurtz

Her husband may no longer be in Congress, but Elizabeth Kucinich says she still keeps tabs on one important aspect of Capitol Hill life: the House cafeteria.

She says of her spouse, former Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), “Something Dennis always used to make sure was that the salad bar remained as much ‘salad’ as possible.”

The Kucinichs both adhere to a vegan — or meat- and dairy-free — diet. The statuesque redhead, 35, reveals to ITK, “I’ve seen, actually since he’s left, quite a lot more cheese going into salad, and a lot more meat, and a lot more mayonnaise.”

She says she’s even reminded the cafeteria staff, whom she calls “lovely,” of her passion for plants: “I got the restaurant manager out once and said — I don’t remember [how many] — but there were like 10 options and six of them contain animal products.” Read more...

Bill Clinton has open invitation for ‘Dancing with the Stars’

By Judy Kurtz

Former President Clinton can play the sax, but can he cha-cha? Karina Smirnoff of “Dancing with the Stars” says the ex-commander in chief has an open invitation to show if he can cut a rug on the hit ABC series.

“We’ve never had Bill Clinton on the show, and I’m a huge fan. The guy has so much charisma and so much personality,” Smirnoff said when asked by ITK which political player she’d like to partner with.

“Dance with me, Bill!” she exclaimed.

“I think he might have some pretty good dance moves,” Smirnoff said, before adding something the pair shares in common, “And he loves the arts.”

The ballroom dancing pro is teaming up with Bright Future International next month for an event in New York called Beyond the Ballet, where young dancers will take the stage with seasoned stars from major theaters around the world. Smirnoff says of the nonprofit, “It’s a charity that brings art to disadvantaged kids ... I’m very excited about the foundation, what it’s doing, and being involved and being a part of it.”

Since being a part of “Dancing with the Stars” for the past 13 seasons, Smirnoff has seen her share of trophy-winning hopefuls strut their stuff on the dance floor. But only a few political types have dared to bust a move in front of a national audience — including former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), Tucker Carlson and Bristol Palin. Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann, said she turned down an offer to appear on the show.

But Smirnoff, who’s currently partnered with Baltimore Ravens player Jacoby Jones, says more should hop on the “Dancing” bandwagon: “I think to be able to allow our politicians to dance and express themselves and enjoy that as an emotional outlet would be something that we should look into.”

And the high-stepping celeb, 35, has a few words of wisdom for any future contestant, “Take it into perspective: you’re wearing spandex, rhinestones and heels. And a lot of times people take it really, really seriously.”

While ITK isn’t sure how Clinton would feel about spandex and rhinestones, Smirnoff adds, “I think as long as you enjoy it; know what it’s about; have fun; and laugh through everything, you’ll have a blast.”

Robert Redford: My dim view of politics has 'gotten darker'

By Judy Kurtz

Robert Redford — who said in a 2011 interview that his view of politics “is so dim it’s almost black,” — tells ITK he now sees the political landscape as having “gotten darker.”

The Academy Award-winning director and actor appeared at a Thursday screening hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) and the Discovery Channel with acclaimed journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward for his new documentary, “All the President’s Men Revisited.”

Redford, 76, played Woodward, opposite Dustin Hoffman as Bernstein, in the 1976 film about The Washington Post journalists’ investigation of the Watergate scandal that led to former President Nixon’s impeachment and resignation.

“Revisited” features a fresh take on the scandal and new interviews with the movie’s actors along with the real-life Watergate players they portrayed.

Rep. Billy Long tells crowd: Quiet down! You’re worse than House members

By Zach DeRitis and Judy Kurtz

“Going once, going twice” — Rep. Billy Long is going back to his roots.

The Missouri Republican put his 30 years of experience as an auctioneer to good use recently, as he made rapid-fire sales for charity at the annual Taste of the South fundraiser.

While balancing on two stools looking out over the packed crowd at DAR Constitution Hall, the congressman, who owned an eponymous auction company, jested, “I’ve never done an auction before, but I got some auction school tapes so we’ll see how it goes.”

As he picked up steam, Long, 57, wasn’t permitting any nonsense from the more than 2,000 guests at the charity event, which aims to raise money for Southern charities and awareness of Southern culture.

“Could ya’ll quiet down?” Long said after whistling into the microphone. “Y’all are worse than the members on the House floor.”

Musicians surprise Goodlatte with a song

By Noura Alfadl-Andreasson

Musicians on Wednesday played a song for Rep. Bob Goodlatte, and it was a big hit with the Virginia Republican.

Three songwriters from the Southwest Virginia Songwriters Association, along with Grammy-winning "Nashville" writer Darrell Brown, came up with the song, “Copyright, Copy-wrong.”

“Say copy right! Yeah, yeah! Not copy wrong! No, No!” is the chorus of the wonky tune that was crooned to the Judiciary Committee chairman during a surprise performance on Wednesday morning.

By the last round of the chorus, even the audience was joining in.

Goodlatte, a leader on issues such as patents and technology, spoke to the more than 100 Recording Academy members who came to Capitol Hill to push legislation.
