President Obama says “the movies won’t be the same” following the death of legendary film critic Roger Ebert. The longtime Chicago Sun-Times syndicated columnist passed away Thursday, just a day after announcing on his blog he was taking a “leave of presence” from writing movie reviews upon learning his cancer had returned. Ebert, 70, lost the ability to eat and speak following a previous battle with the disease. In a statement Thursday, Obama said, “Michelle and I are saddened to hear about the passing of Roger Ebert. For a generation of Americans — and especially Chicagoans — Roger was the movies.” Saying his thoughts and prayers were with Ebert’s wife and family, Obama praised Ebert: “When he didn't like a film, he was honest; when he did, he was effusive — capturing the unique power of the movies to take us somewhere magical.” Ebert said in his Tuesday blog post: "My intent is to continue to write selected reviews but to leave the rest to a talented team of writers handpicked and greatly admired by me." He wrote at the time, "What's more, I'll be able at last to do what I've always fantasized about doing: reviewing only the movies I want to review." The famed scribe and former “At the Movies” host made his “two thumbs up” review a mainstay in popular culture.

Rep. Doug LaMalfa and his family are safe, but their Northern California rice farm suffered damage after a bizarre series of events caused by a hit-and-run driver.
A big rig driver hit a power pole early Monday morning, which led to a transformer across from the California Republican’s farm to explode, according to local station KRCR-TV. As a result, electrical lines crossed, and an office on the property caught fire and cut off the electric, phone and water service.

Mike Tyson is launching a petition as he joins a bipartisan group of lawmakers in urging President Obama to posthumously pardon the first African-American world heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson.
Tyson created the Change.org petition Wednesday after meeting with Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.).
The majority leader, along with fellow Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Mo Cowan (D-Mass.) and Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), introduced legislation last month to pardon Johnson.
At the time, Reid — an amateur boxer in high school — said in a statement, “Johnson’s memory was unjustly tarnished by a racially-motivated criminal conviction, and it is now time to recast his legacy.”
Johnson, who died in 1946, was imprisoned for a year under the Mann Act, for crossing state lines with his white girlfriend.
In the petition, which garnered more than 700 supporters within hours of launching, the 46-year-old retired heavyweight champ writes, “I started this petition to keep the Jack Johnson pardon at the forefront of peoples minds. I am honored to do this for his legacy.”

It’ll be a music-filled next few months for supporters of Rep. John Shimkus. From Beyonce to New Kids on the Block, the Illinois Republican’s fundraising arm is hitting up a wide-ranging series of concerts. The real bummer is … the House member’s not actually going to any of the big-ticket shindigs! While many members of Congress push for campaign contributions using headline-grabbing events — Sen. Tom Harkin’s (D-Iowa) fundraisers featuring pop superstar Lady Gaga raised eyebrows in 2011 and earlier this year — the Shimkus campaign’s choice in musical acts is nothing if not eclectic. The lawmaker is slated to start the concert extravaganza with an April 9 Fleetwood Mac show at Washington’s Verizon Center, according to the Sunlight Foundation’s website PoliticalPartyTime.org. Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) will also fundraise at the same concert. Shimkus will then blast to the past with his next offering, a reunion of ’90s groups, including New Kids on the Block, Boys II Men, and 98 Degrees, for a June 14 concert in the District.
