New book reveals how to survive and thrive as a congressional staffer

By Judy Kurtz

Working on Capitol Hill can be like a game of “Survivor.”

That’s why Nicholas Balthazar says he penned The Capitol Hill Playbook: A Machiavellian Guide for Young Political Professionals.

“I wanted to distill in a book all the things a person just starting out in politics would need to know to be successful and to survive,” he says.

Balthazar, who wrote the just-released book under a pseudonym, is a congressional staffer. He was inspired to start writing the book two years ago when he noticed a young intern who didn’t have a mentor or anyone to guide her. He realized, much like the intern, that when he was starting out on Capitol Hill, he didn’t have someone to dole out advice.

Women going under the knife to get arms like Michelle Obama

By Judy Kurtz

Women are going under the knife in droves to get toned arms just like the first lady.

According to new statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the number of ladies opting for arm lifts has catapulted more than 4,000 percent in the last decade.

A news release from ASPS declares, “Doctors say there is no single reason behind the increase, though celebrities from the White House to the red carpet may be having an influence.”

A poll conducted for the group found that more and more women are eyeing the biceps of some of their favorite stars. ASPS writes that the poll indicates “women most admire the arms of first lady Michelle Obama.”

Congressman does his own rendition of ’Carolina in My Mind’

By Judy Kurtz

Rep. Jared Huffman’s been hard at work, clocking in on Capitol Hill by day and plucking a six string at night.

The California Democrat was gearing up over the past few weeks for his “Hootenanny” Tuesday fundraiser.

The congressman has been getting in some jam sessions with his band for the music-filled event in Petaluma, Calif. Huffman even bought a new guitar for his Washington abode so he can practice his licks while in the nation’s capital. We hear he was practicing his twist on the James Taylor classic, “Carolina in My Mind,” switching up the lyrics to “Petaluma in My Mind.”

Huffman Communications Director Paul Arden tells us while he hasn’t heard any sounds coming from his boss’s Longworth House Office Building work area — “Only legislating here,” he said — he does hold the lawmaker’s musical ability in high regard.

Writer makes early plea for The Hill's '50 Most Beautiful'

By Judy Kurtz

The Hill’s “50 Most Beautiful People” list doesn’t come out until July, but that hasn’t stopped at least one early nomination campaign.

BuzzFeed’s Benny Johnson posted Tuesday the “23 Reasons Why John Stanton Should be on The Hill’s Most Beautiful People List.” Among the top reasons Johnson lists for the BuzzFeed Washington bureau chief’s inclusion: “He can pull off a golfers cap quite well,” “Lawmakers love him,” and “He knows how to twerk on his co-workers.”

Johnson also contends Stanton can “drink with the best of them,” before adding, “especially if it’s Senator Gillibrand." A photo from a March BuzzFeed Brews event featuring Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) is included to back up the scribe’s claims.

The appeal concludes by saying, “And so we humbly nominate John Stanton for The Hill’s 50 Most Beautiful List … Because if he doesn’t make the list, HE WILL FIND YOU.”

Gayle King: Run for office? Never

By Judy Kurtz

She’s one of the faces of “CBS This Morning,” editor at large for O magazine and spent years behind the local news anchor desk, but there’s one job Gayle King won’t be adding to her resume: politician.

ITK caught up with King at The Hill’s cocktail party sponsored by Coca-Cola kicking off the White House Correspondent’s Association weekend at the Turkish ambassador’s residence on Friday, where she said she would “absolutely, positively not” run for public office.

Oprah Winfrey’s BFF was emphatic, exclaiming, “I know they always say, ‘Never say never.’ But I can tell you — never.” She then said in an Oprah-esque sing-songy voice, “Ne-ver!”

Celeb impersonator: Ricin attacks give industry a bad name

By Judy Kurtz

A celebrity impersonator who performs as both Elvis Presley and Wayne Newton says the arrest of an impersonator for allegedly sending the deadly poison ricin to President Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) gives the tribute artist community a bad name.

James Everett Dutschke, a Wayne Newton impersonator, was arrested last week. The FBI says the Mississippi man was behind the letters sent last month containing ricin. Before Dutschke’s arrest, charges had been filed against rival impersonator Paul Kevin Curtis, who has made a living portraying Elvis. Those charges against Curtis were subsequently dropped and he was released. According to reports, each of the impersonators has accused the other of trying to frame him.

Brian Brenner, an Ohio impersonator who sings “Viva Las Vegas” as The King and hits the stage as Newton, calls the circumstances surrounding the ricin case “surreal.”
