Treasury official: Geithner has made no decision on possible departure

By Peter Schroeder - 06/30/11 05:47 PM ET

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has made no decision on whether he will leave the administration after the government reaches a debt limit deal, according to a department official.

In response to a report that Geithner was considering leaving his post at the top of the Treasury once an agreement is reached to raise the debt limit, a Treasury official said nothing had been decided yet.

The official emphasized that Geithner did not plan to make a decision while focused on the job at hand -- in particular talks to reduce the deficit while raising the $14.3 trillion debt limit.

Earlier in the day, Bloomberg News reported that Geithner had informed the White House he was considering leaving after the debt limit had been addressed, but that he had not yet decided on the matter.
