Poll: Clear majority thinks Washington mishandles taxpayer dollars

By Jay Heflin - 10/18/10 09:13 AM ET

An overwhelming majority of respondents (70 percent) say the government does not spend taxpayers' money wisely and fairly, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll.

Republicans and independent voters feel more strongly than Democrats on this issue.

In addition, 85 percent of Republicans and 60 percent of independents believe the government has too much money, a view shared by just 39 percent of Democrats.

Rasmussen also found that 66 percent of respondents believe they are overtaxed, with 75 percent saying federal, state and local taxes should not be more than 20 percent of a person's income.

Sixty-eight percent of respondents prefer a smaller government with fewer services and lower taxes, Rasmussen found.

The findings come as a new Washington Post poll finds that more than half of respondents think federal workers are overpaid.
