FAA reauthorization lands one-month extension

After several twists and turns Thursday night into Friday, Congress cleared a one-month extension of the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill. 

The Senate changed the bill from a three-month extension to one-month, removing a portion of the bill that would've changed spending allocation formulas to states for about $925 million in infrastructure spending. 

The House had passed a three-month extension with the formula changes but at least one senator said the fix should go into the next jobs bill, as promised to Rep. James Oberstar, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. 

Oberstar has argued that the current formula would send most of the nearly $1 billion to four states -- California, Illinois, Louisiana and Washington, while 22 states received nothing. Using regular highway funding formulas would more evenly distribute the money to states for projects, according to Oberstar. 

The House and Senate are expected to meet within the next few months to work out differences on a longer-term FAA reauthorization.
