Credit union group attracts Boehner, other lawmakers to D.C. meeting

By Peter Schroeder - 02/27/11 01:57 PM ET

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is among a number of policymakers slated to speak to thousands of credit union officials at the group's annual meeting this week.

House Financial Services Chairman Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), and Elizabeth Warren, the president's assistant in charge of setting up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) are also on the schedule for the Credit Union National Association's (CUNA) Governmental Affairs Conference.

The conference, which runs from Monday through Wednesday, is expected to touch a number of hot financial issues on Capitol Hill, ranging from efforts to overhaul the nation's ailing housing system and new limits on debit card fees being implemented under the Dodd-Frank financial reform law.

CUNA has historically opposed limits on so-called interchange fees. However, a provision in Dodd-Frank requires the Federal Reserve to impose caps on those fees, and has been the subject of heated debate, pitting retailers against banks with billions in revenue at stake.

While some Republicans and Democrats have been critical of the provision, no bills have been introduce to either repeal the measure or reduce its impact.

In addition to Chairman Bachus, the group will hear from three other members of the House Financial Services Committee -- Reps. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.) and Ed Royce (R-Calif.).

They will also hear from their counterparts in Congress's upper chamber, as two members of the Senate Banking Committee are on the schedule. Sens. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.) will speak to the group Wednesday.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the House Majority Whip will also attend.

But the group isn't slated to hear from just policymakers. Monday's general session will be highlighted by a speech from Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger, III, the airline pilot that successfully landed a damaged passenger jet in the Hudson River in 2009.
