Timothy Geithner: I will be at Treasury Department for 'the foreseeable future'

By Peter Schroeder - 06/30/11 05:41 PM ET

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Thursday he would remain at his position for "the foreseeable future."

"I live for this work. It's the only thing I've ever done. I believe in it," he told former President Bill Clinton at an event hosted by the Clinton Global Initiative. "I'm going to be doing it for the foreseeable future."

Clinton asked Geithner about his future at the Treasury after media reports indicated Geithner was mulling an exit from government work once a deal to increase the debt limit is hammered out. A Treasury official maintained that he had reached no decision so far on the issue, and was focused on the job at hand.

However, Geithner did acknowledge the personal circumstances that are reportedly weighing on his thinking.

"I have a family, and my son's going back to New York to finish high school," he said. "I'm going to be commuting for a while."

Bloomberg News first reported that Geithner had informed the White House he was considering leaving the administration at the close of debt limit negotiations.
