Goldman's executive suite to testify before Congress
Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein will be joined by 6 fellow executives when testifying Tuesday before the investigation panel headed by Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.).
The witnesses include former partner Daniel Sparks, managing director Michael Swenson, former managing director Joshua Birnbaum, executive VP and CFO David Viniar, chief risk officer Craig Broderick, and executive director Fabrice Tourre who was named in the SEC indictment that claims the bank defrauded investors.
Tuesday's hearing will be the fourth in a series on the causes and consequences of the financial crisis. The meeting will focus on the role of investment banks that peddled mortgage-back securities that eventually became toxic and contributed mightily to the near-collapse of the financial markets.
The SEC has claimed that Goldman withheld from investors material information about the soundness of the mortgage-backed securities they purchased. Tourre was the only individual named in the SEC case and has been accused of selling these products that he knew would eventually lose value.
