Republicans: Where's the Democratic budget?

By Bernie Becker - 05/19/11 12:16 PM ET

There’s little doubt: Republicans want you to know that it’s been 750 days since the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a budget.

Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) — the ranking members of the Senate Budget and Finance panels, respectively — took to the chamber floor on Thursday to highlight that point.

Republicans have said that, given growing deficit problems and the current fiscal situation, it's irresponsible for Democrats not to put a proposal forward.

To further push that point, a fair number of Republicans in both the House and the Senate made statements on Twitter, and criticized Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for shirking his leadership duty. (Among those who took to Twitter: The office of Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the House majority leader; Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the House Budget Committee chairman; Sen. John Cornyn of Texas; and the conservative Republican Study Committee.)

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), who recently took a break from the Gang of Six talks, also knocked Reid over his approach to deficits in a Thursday op-ed.

For his part, Reid had a tweet of his own on the matter, appearing to knock Ryan’s budget for its treatment of Medicare.

Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), Senate Budget Committee chairman, has yet to release a budget resolution this year, and there is talk that, due to disputes over taxes, he might not move one at all.
