Boehner, Obama meet to discuss deficit deal

By Kevin Bogardus - 12/09/12 05:13 PM ET

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) met with President Obama on Sunday to discuss the “fiscal cliff,” according to aides to both leaders.

The meeting occurred at the White House to discuss how to avoid going over the cliff — a set of massive tax increases and budget cuts that will go into effect early next year unless Congress acts. Aides to Boehner and Obama gave the same statement when asked about the meeting by The Hill.

“This afternoon, the President and Speaker Boehner met at the White House to discuss efforts to resolve the fiscal cliff. We're not reading out details of the conversation, but the lines of communication remain open,” said that statement.

The meeting comes after Boehner said on Friday that there was no progress in fiscal-cliff negotiations. Obama and Boehner had spoken by phone on Wednesday and their aides talked on Thursday.

A White House aide noted that Obama spoke with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Friday.
