Gingrich to speak to Balanced Budget Caucus on Thursday

By Walter Alarkon - 05/17/10 01:59 PM ET

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will meet with the bipartisan Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus on Capitol Hill this week.

Gingrich (R-Ga.) was Speaker when the House passed a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget in the 1990s. The measure stalled in the Senate.

The group Gingrich will speak to Thursday afternoon was formed this year by Reps. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) and Jim Marshall (D-Ga.). Gingrich's speech will be called "A Balanced Budget: We've Done it Before, We Can Do It Again."

Gingrich hasn't ruled out seeking the GOP presidential nomination in 2012. At last month's Southern Republican Leadership Conference, a cattle call of sorts for possible GOP presidential candidates, Gingrich urged Republicans to offer a different vision than President Barack Obama's.
