Van Hollen unveils companion bill to Schumer's Disclose Act

By Administrator - 04/29/10 01:12 PM ET

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) on Thursday introduced the House counterpart to Senate legislation that requires greater disclosure on campaign funding.

The Disclose Act targets leaders of labor unions, advocacy organizations and corporations that run campaign ads by requiring them to appear at the end of the commercial and announce that they sponsored the ad.

The top 5 organizations that donated to the ad would also be disclosed and contributions over $1,000 would be reported to the Federal Election Commission within 24 hours of the money is spent.

The Committee on House Administration has jurisdiction over the bill. Its chairman, Robert Brady (D-Penn.), plans to host a hearing on the legislation next week.

"I will be holding a hearing on this legislation as soon as next Thursday," he said in prepared remarks. "I am very committed to getting this legislation passed in the House, passed in the Senate, and on the president's desk by the time midterm elections are in full swing."
