Neal vying for Ways and Means chairmanship

By Vicki Needham - 07/20/10 05:40 PM ET

Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.) reconfirmed Tuesday he'd like to take the helm of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee.

Neal, who has expressed interest in the top job since the panel changed hands earlier this year, told the ABC/Washington Post’s "Top Line" in an interview Tuesday that he'd definitely like the post.

When asked by reporters who would be the next Ways and Means chairman, Neal answered, "I've got a suggestion."

Neal is chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures.

If chosen, Neal would choose fellow Massachusetts colleague Rep. Barney Frank (D), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, in leading a House panel.

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
