Senate sets up cloture vote for Monday on tax bill
Senate Democrats are moving ahead with a package to extend the Bush tax cuts for two years, setting up a cloture vote for 3 p.m. Monday.
A draft bill is expected to be released soon, with Senate Democrats ironing out the final details of the package, that extends the Bush-era tax cuts for two years and federal unemployment benefits for 13 months.
The House has balked at the plan and said they will wait to see what the Senate does before determining whether they'll bring up the bill.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said earlier Thursday night that the House will probably take a vote, but on what remains to be seen.
"Well, we're going to see what comes from the Senate," he said on MSNBC. "But we're going to vote on something, I'm sure. Whether it's exactly what the president made a deal with on the Republicans or not, that remains to be seen."
The White House and some Senate Republicans have said the measure is non-negotiable, especially on issues such as the estate tax.
