IRS releases data book for 2010

By Bernie Becker - 03/14/11 01:35 PM ET

For those with some spare moments on hand, the IRS has released a data book which gives a detailed look at the work the agency did in fiscal 2010.

Doug Shulman, the IRS commissioner, said in a message included in the book that implementing tax provisions from the stimulus package was an agency focus during 2010.

Shulman also noted that the IRS collected roughly $2.3 trillion in taxes and disbursed some $467 billion in refunds, but the roughly 80-page publication also reports that gross tax collections and the number of total returns dropped off a bit from 2009 to 2010. The recent recession has been blamed in the past for decreases in tax revenue.

The book also contains tables on enforcement and taxpayer assistance, among other issues.
