Poll: Majority want tax hikes and spending cuts in debt deal

By Sterling C. Beard - 11/21/12 01:02 PM ET

The majority of voters in the United States want to see tax increases and spending cuts in a deficit deal, according to a new poll.

Sixty-eight percent of likely voters surveyed by the conservative-leading pollster Rasmussen said they would like to see tax hikes and spending cuts in a deficit-reduction package. Twenty-four percent said they would prefer a budget deal that included only spending cuts, while only 4 percent supported a deal that only raised taxes.

While voters said they would prefer to see Washington reach a deal that includes more spending cuts than tax increases, they expect the reverse to happen.

The poll of 1,000 likely voters was conducted on Nov. 20 and had a margin of error of 3 percent.
