Camp questions price tag on small business jobs bill

By Jay Heflin - 03/17/10 10:51 AM ET

Ranking Ways and Means Republican Dave Camp (R-Mich.) on Wednesday questioned the accuracy of pricing the small business tax bill, arguing its advertised $17 billion cost is much higher because of the way the legislation structures Build America Bonds. He contends the bill contains roughly $42 billion in tax increases.

"I think it is important to understand what the net tax relief is in the bill," he said. "And I think it is different than what is published."

The bill extends the bonds, which Ways and Means Chairman Sandy Levin (D-Mich.) defended, claiming the bonds are the cornerstone of the bill.

The Ways and Means Committee stands in recess because of a vote on the House floor.
