Grassley and Rush team up to fight tax-exempt hospitals

By Administrator - 03/26/10 02:41 PM ET

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) have joined forces to ensure that tax-exempt hospitals provide a respectable level of charity care.

A growing number of non-profit medical centers have improved their bottom lines through patient dumping or by requiring patients with little to no insurance to pay for services upfront.

Tax-exempt organizations receive lucrative tax breaks to provide care to uninsured or poorer patients, so the lawmakers are looking for ways to ensure these organizations offer that care or lose their tax status.

The Hill will have more on this story this weekend.
