Group seeks tax parity for guns and bullets

By Jay Heflin - 04/05/10 04:25 PM ET

The National Shooting Sports Foundation on Monday called for Sens. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) to support legislation that changes the payment schedule for excise taxes on firearms and ammunition from bi-weekly to quarterly.

Nearly all other tax payments are made quarterly.

The Connecticut-based organization claims the tax change would free up approximately $22 million annually for manufacturers to invest in new plants and product designs.

Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) has authored legislation that changes the payment schedule. It has 18 co-sponsors. Reps. Ron Kind (D-Wis.) and Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) have written companion legislation in the House.
