IRS notifying small businesses about healthcare tax credit
The Internal Revenue Service has started mailing postcards to four million small businesses letting them know about an up to a 35 percent tax credit on insurance premiums under the new healthcare law.
Between 2010 and 2013, businesses can claim a maximum 35 percent credit of premiums paid by eligible small businesses and 25 percent of premiums paid by tax-exempt organizations. The maximum credit goes to the smallest employers, those with 10 or fewer full-time equivalent employees paying average wages of $25,000 or less, according to the IRS.
"We want to make sure small employers across the nation realized that -- effective this tax year -- they may be eligible for a valuable new tax credit," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman in a release. "We urge every small employer to take advantage of this credit if they qualify."
The credit is available to small employers that pay at least half the cost of single coverage for their employees this year and can be claimed on their 2011 tax returns.
