Slaughter: House has votes to pass extenders package

By Vicki Needham - 05/25/10 09:14 PM ET

The House has the votes to pass a $200 billion tax extenders bill, House Rules Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) said Tuesday night.

During a hearing to approve the process for a same-day rule, Slaughter said negotiations were "typical" with the Senate but that the House has the votes to pass the tax cuts and social spending package.

"We won't leave here without a jobs bill," Slaughter said during the hearing.

The bill could arrive in the House Rules Committee on Wednesday morning and then immediately go to the floor for a vote on final passage. If the bill isn't ready Wednesday, the panel would have to set up another same-day rule for Thursday.

The Rules committee has plans to work on a Defense Department authorization beginning Wednesday afternoon, and the "Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections" (DISCLOSE) Act on Thursday.
