Geithner, Boehner meet to discuss Europe

By Peter Schroeder - 11/01/11 05:59 PM ET

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) met Tuesday afternoon to discuss the European debt crisis and its implications for the fragile American economy.

The two held a one-on-one meeting on Capitol Hill as the European Union's efforts to boost ailing nations was thrown into doubt, following the surprise announcement by Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou that the deal hammered out by EU members would be voted up or down by Greek voters in a referendum.

The high-risk move puts the hard-earned arrangement in danger, and placed the Greek government on the brink of collapse, shaking financial markets across the globe. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day down nearly 300 points, or 2.5 percent.

The powwow also came days before Geithner will accompany President Obama to France for a meeting of G20 leaders, where Europe's struggles to control its sovereign debt crisis will be a major topic of discussion.
