Treasury undersecretary to attend G-20 meeting

By Bernie Becker - 10/29/12 01:22 PM ET

Lael Brainard, Treasury’s undersecretary for international affairs, will represent the U.S. at a Group of 20 meeting next week in Mexico City, the department announced Monday.

The Mexico City meeting starts Sunday, two days before Election Day. Brainard will be attending on behalf of Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who has attended the event in previous years.

Geithner has said that, even if President Obama wins a second term in November, he is unlikely to stay on as Treasury secretary.

The G-20 is a group of advanced emerging and advanced economies, which includes 19 countries and the European Union.

Treasury said Brainard would “discuss measures to promote global growth and economic stability” while in Mexico City.

Geithner attended meetings of G-20 finance chiefs in Scotland, South Korea and France between 2009 and 2011.
