Orszag to write New York Times column

By Vicki Needham - 09/03/10 01:00 PM ET

Former director of the Office of Management and Budget Peter Orszag has signed on as a columnist for The New York Times op-ed page.

Orszag, who created blogs while head of the Congressional Budget Office and the OMB, will begin his new writing gig Sept. 7, and his columns are set to appear once or twice a month, The New York Times announced Friday.

The columns are expected to cover fiscal policy, education and healthcare. He'll also contribute to economic issues The Times's Opinionator blog.

During his brief tenure in the Obama administration, the 41-year-old Orszag gained a reputation as a deficit hawk who promoted cost-control policies in conduction with stimulus spending he said was needed to dig the country out of the recession.

"We welcome Peter Orszag's expertise and insight to our op-ed lineup," said Andrew Rosenthal, editorial page editor of The New York Times.

"As a Washington insider and one of the most recognizable names in economics, his writing will provide a unique perspective on the national landscape."

Orszag, an economist who left the White House's budget office in July, is a visiting fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He was the director at CBO before heading to the White House. Prior to that, he was senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, where he was the first director of The Hamilton Project.
