Group launches website uncovering senators connected to oil

By Jay Heflin - 08/17/10 06:15 PM ET

Oil Change International on Tuesday launched a six-figure advertising campaign and extensive social media push that shows the cozy relationship some senators have with Big Oil.

One aspect of the push is the website CleanUptheSenate.com that profiles 46 senators from both parties that the group claims are closely aligned with the oil industry.

"This campaign exposes these senators and lets people send them a message that it's time they clean up their act," Steve Kretzmann, the group's executive director, said in prepared remarks. "It's time for a Separation of Oil and State."

The website, which redirects to bobbinginpetroleum.org, has complied information such as political campaign contributions from oil interests and voting histories on key bills.

Oil Change International is a nonprofit organization that claims to "expose the true cost of fossil fuels" and supports the transition to cleaner energy sources. It also seeks to identify the political barriers that hinder efforts to move to green energy.
