House leaders remain undecided on pre-election vote on Bush tax cuts

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) on Tuesday evening emerged from a meeting with fellow leaders suggesting that no decision has been made on whether his chamber will host a pre-election vote extending tax cuts enacted by President George W. Bush.

House takes another stab at Treaty Shopping in 9/11 bill

Most see GOP Pledge as campaign gimmick, poll finds

Fifty percent of likely voters view the Republicans' Pledge to America as a campaign gimmick, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll. 

Just 32 percent regard the plan as a serious policy document while 18 percent aren't sure what it is.

Fiscal commission schedules final meeting

The National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform will hold its final meeting Wednesday before completing a final report due Dec. 1.

The bipartisan panel, which is developing policies to improve the nation's mid- and longer-term fiscal situation, will hold the meeting at 9:30 a.m. in Dirksen 608. 

Witnesses for the final session include Paul Posner, director of the Public Administration Program, George Mason University; Janet St. Laurent, managing director, Defense Capabilities and Management, Government Accountability Office (GAO); and Patricia Dalton, managing director, Natural Resources and Environment, GAO. 

Posner will discuss performance budgeting while St. Laurent and Dalton will focus on finding potential budget savings by eliminating duplication, overlap and wasteful spending.

CEOs see uptick in layoffs, survey finds

The Business Roundtable on Tuesday released its third quarter 2010 CEO Economic Outlook Survey showing that 23 percent of respondents expect to decrease U.S. employment in the next six months, up from 17 percent who predicted layoffs last quarter.
