To Sargent Shriver, a great man, Godspeed

By Brent Budowsky - 01/19/11 08:22 AM ET

R. Sargent Shriver was one of the great men of his generation and his century. He will be very deeply missed.

Shriver was at the core of the Kennedy legacy, and America will long benefit profoundly from the Shriver legacy as well.

The poor around the world live a little bit better because Sargent Shriver was their friend. The poor throughout our nation live a little bit better because Sargent Shriver cared about and fought for them.

The image of our nation around the world, and the spirit of our nation at home, have always been lifted higher because of the good works Sargent Shriver did for others, on behalf of us.

The tone of our politics has always been lifted higher by Shriver's personal integrity, the good will he extended to others and the high standards he set for himself, his family and our nation.

Sargent Shriver lives on in the great deeds of his children, the inspiration he gave to his friends, the multitudes he touched with his life and the standards he set for all who knew him.

Sargent Shriver was a good man, and a great man.

Farewell to a husband, father, idealist, visionary, success story and statesman who makes us all proud to be American.
