Save your holiday resolve

Thanksgiving traditionally marks the beginning of a season of gluttony that ends with meaningless New Year’s resolutions to lose weight. There is nothing wrong with enjoying food and fellowship, but we should not allow the season to destroy our judgment. The things that cause excessive weight gain during the rest of year are the same things causing weight gain during this part of the year. The same safe guards are also effective. We need to understand that it is impossible to gain weight if caloric output is equal to or less than caloric input.

Some people say they are different and that they have a gland problem. They are right — they have a salivary gland problem.

There are some very well-known tricks that will allow one to still enjoy fellowship and eating without gaining a lot of weight, such as putting out a plate of celery sticks and carrot sticks instead of a plate of chocolate candy. Those kinds of snacks can be enjoyed very easily without covering them with salad dressing. Apple and pear slices, dried apricots, pears and raisins are all delicious and low-calorie. Also, if thirst strikes, drink a glass of water first before you grab the egg nog or the punch. It will decrease your thirst substantially and you will drink far less calories. By following these simple tricks and examples you will have a much healthier and happier holiday season without the guilt, and you can save your New Year’s resolution for much more important matters.
