No Such Thing As a Bad Day

By Ron Christie - 05/21/08 10:38 AM ET
Amidst the well-wishes and prayers for the health of liberal lion Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), America has just lost an outstanding public servant who served his country with honor and dignity. His name is Hamilton Jordan. Jordan worked tirelessly for civil rights in his youth, toured Vietnam as a civilian volunteer and went on to serve as President Jimmy Carter’s chief of staff in the White House.

I first met Jordan while working in the White House as he was keen to champion a bipartisan groundswell of support to battle cancer in America. Hamilton was the perfect advocate for this cause, having beaten cancer three times in his life previously. His secret? He always told me that a positive attitude and a well-informed mind could lick just about anything.

Jordan was the author of No Such Thing as a Bad Day, a memoir that describes his time in public service as well as his battles against and recovery from cancer. The book shares the essence of his remarkable character, spirit and outlook on life.

I was happy when Jordan became my mentor. I was honored to call him my friend. He will be sorely missed.

Jordan was just 63.
