Hillary’s $30 million Godzilla Direct-Mail List seems to be a Big Flop

By Dick Morris - 02/27/07 09:36 AM ET
The Clinton campaign has loudly touted the supposedly amazing direct-mail list that Hillary built up during her virtually unopposed Senate race — at a cost of $30 million.

But maybe it wasn’t such a great investment after all.

Six days ago, the Clinton campaign started a campaign to raise $1 million in one week from the “grass roots.” On Day One, Bill Clinton sent an impassioned e-mail to all of the subscribers on HillaryClinton.com asking for contributions. On Day Two, James Carville sent a second e-mail asking for money for the urgent fight against the unnamed attackers who were ready to pounce against Hillary. Then, yesterday, on Day Five, Madeline Albright was dragged in to make yet another pitch.

On Day Six, the campaign has received slightly more than $800,000. That’s a lot of money, but it doesn’t suggest that the Godzilla list is so great. The money is not pouring in. One would have expected Clinton to quickly and easily surpass her goal. She didn’t.

By contrast, at a Cincinnati fundraiser for Obama yesterday, organizers brought in almost half a million dollars.

The ability to fire, reload, and fire again will be crucial in this nominating process, and Hillary’s list is looking more like a Colonial flintlock rifle than a modern-day machine gun.

NOTE: The Clinton campaign just sent out a fourth plea for money to reach the $1 million goal — this one's another Bill Clinton letter. Looks like they want to prevent an embarrassment — the money train is apparently not pulling into the station as fast as they expected.
