Bush Silent on Walter Reed

The latest on the appalling conditions for outpatients at Walter Reed Hospital? Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has ordered an investigation. Well, good for him. Better late than never, I guess. And you certainly can’t blame Gates for a disgrace that happened under Donald Rumsfeld.
But you know what I find strange about this Walter Reed scandal? And scandal it is. As reported in the Washington Post, Iraqi war veterans were forced to live in squalor any slum lord would go to jail for. What’s strange is: There’s been not one word of outrage or condemnation from the Commander-in-Chief himself.
On February 20, Tony Snow assured reporters the president “was aware of conditions at Walter Reed” even before the article appeared in the Post. So, why didn’t he correct the problem long ago? And, once it became public, don’t you think Bush should have said something, or done something, about it?
There’s been total silence, instead. Not one person has been fired. Not one word of outrage has been uttered. And this is the same president who habitually brags about “supporting our troops.”
On the other hand, why should we be surprised that George Bush has expressed no regrets for the deplorable conditions at Walter Reed? He still hasn’t attended the funeral of one American killed in Iraq.
