The context of McCain 'out of context'

By A.B. Stoddard - 02/22/07 09:33 AM ET
Is it hard to think of anything besides the Hillary/Obama/Geffen fight, Britney leaving rehab for the second time in a week, and Anna Nicole Smith's body rotting while the courtroom battle over her money rages on cable as "breaking news"? I know it is, but once again I have Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on the brain.

Yesterday Vice President Cheney told ABC News that McCain tried to eat his words, the ones he recently uttered about President Bush being "badly served" by Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "John had some nasty things to say about me the other day, and then next time I saw him he ran over to me and apologized," Cheney said. He added that McCain "came up to me on the floor a couple of days later, the next time I was on the floor of the Senate, said he'd been quoted out of context, and then basically offered an apology, which I was happy to accept."

We all remember that after his rebel ride on the campaign trail in 2000, a defeated McCain decided to retire his maverick status and realign himself with the Bush administration. It worked, he helped campaign for Bush in 2004 in pivotal states and it paid off in numerous endorsements and contributions from key players in the GOP establishment and the Bush infrastucture. In the last six months, while supporting Bush and an unpopular war, McCain walked a fine political line by criticizing the conduct of the war, pre-war planning and Rumsfeld.

It is hard to imagine McCain, whose close relationship with the press helped fuel his 2000 campaign, being quoted out of context. But either way, Cheney made sure that voters will read about this dust-up and decide for themselves.
