Early is Good — It Gives Obama the Chance to Answer Questions

Everyone says it, so it must be true: This campaign for president sure is starting early. But is that necessarily a bad thing?
Not in my book — more to write about! And the power on the microscope is sure getting turned up on these candidates. More and more scrutiny early. Maybe not a bad thing. Given the crunch of early primaries and caucuses, 2007 may be the judgment year.
That's why I am curious about Barack Obama, who I do like, but who seems to have voted "present" on a number of tough bills in the Illinois legislature.
After talking in his announcement speech about the need to "make hard choices" and combating the "failure of leadership," he has some explaining to do himself.
Obama voted present on two late-term abortion bills (HB 382 and SB 230). He voted present on a bill (SB 759) that required mandatory adult prosecution for firing a gun on or near school grounds. It passed 52-1. Again, he voted present on two parental-notification abortion bills in 2001. He may have had good reason for questioning these bills, but why not take a stand and explain that stance? A question that Sen. Obama will have to answer this year, I'm sure.
