Hillary Finds a Presidential Style

Hillary's new Internet speech to the nation (see www.hillaryclinton.com) is a very interesting compromise between her chatty, overly feminine on-the-couch announcement and followup and her screechy, shrill platform style. It shows her at a desk speaking to the nation with what could be the Rose Garden behind her. It all looks very presidential and she speaks in measured tones with a teleprompter. It is easy to imagine her as our president as she delivers her remarks. While the substance left a lot to be desired — more on that later — her focus groups must have informed her of the defects of her earlier styles and she may have found just the right medium for her communications.
She says she will speak in this format "almost weekly." This will give her a way of bypassing the free media and its pesky questions without having to speak in sound bites or in 30-second ads. She can use this long form and the stateswoman-like effect it gives her to deliver the rhetoric of the campaign and make announcements of her positions. It is really a presidential-address format tailored to the needs of a political campaign, important for its impact on this race and for its possibility as a new form of political communications.
