Two different deaths

By Peter Fenn - 02/18/07 01:11 PM ET
Please. No more Anna Nicole Smith. This is out of control. Enough. This is not news anymore.

I can’t help but juxtapose coverage devoted 24/7 to the silliness that is the aftermath of her unfortunate death with the article in Thursday’s Washington Post about the death of Brian Freeman in Iraq. Brian Freeman was devoted to helping an 11-year-old boy get a life saving heart operation in the United States. He was getting visas, raising the money, lining up the hospital care. He had found his calling, said his wife, helping children in nations ravaged by war.

The picture that brought tears to your eyes was of this smiling, handsome man with this young boy taken just hours before the West Point graduate was kidnapped and killed. Brain Freeman was not enthusiastic about the war, his wife and colleagues said, but he was doing his duty and doing it well.

This courageous and caring man leaves behind a wife and two young children. He also leaves behind a sense in all of us of a life that could have been. This is the news that really matters. Not what we are seeing on cable these days.
