The president spoke for quite a while about Iraq and Iran at his press conference. He attempted once again to make a case for his escalation and to downplay the growing revolt within his own party over his policy.
On Tuesday, I was quite surprised to see Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) flip out: If we don’t “win” in Iraq, he said, we would have to fight “them” over here. Oh, that is Boehner being Boehner, I thought. Lo and behold, Bush hits the same crazy message — “If we fail there, the enemy will follow us here.” We have singlehandedly created more terrorists, inflamed the Muslim world, destabilized the Middle East with a war that has spun out of control. No amount of spinning on the president’s part will ever change that.
Here are the words of an expert: “Whose life would be on my hands as the commander in chief because I, unilaterally, went beyond international law, went beyond the stated mission, and said we’re going to show our macho? We’re going into Baghdad. We’re going to be an occupying power — Americain an Arab land — with no allies at our side? It would have been disastrous.” That was George H. W. Bush to a reunion of Gulf War veterans, Feb. 28, 1999.
Enough said.
