Mitt Romney (R) might be the only presidential candidate to lose before he announces his candidacy. His announcement yesterday comes after two months of freefall in most polls as voters discover that he has been inconsistent in his positions on abortion and gay rights. Now, to add to the impression of flipping and flopping, he is attempting to re-create himself as a son of Michigan rather than the adopted son of Massachusetts.
But the real problem Romney faces is the recent emergence of Newt Gingrich as a real conservative alternative. Considered “Old Reliable” by the right wing, Gingrich has become the heir to conservative votes now that George Allen and Bill Frist are not candidates.
