Air Nancy

By Bill Press - 02/09/07 09:15 AM ET
I don’t get it. Are Republicans really this silly? Or are they just pretending? Either way, they look like a bunch of clowns.

First, they shut down debate in the Senate over Iraq.

And now, in the House — with the Iraq war out of control, 45 million Americans with no health insurance, and global warming destroying the planet — what are they debating? The size of Nancy Pelosi’s plane.

Get serious! This whole flap over Pelosi’s plane is childish.

As anyone with half a brain can see, the rules are simple:

1.    After 9/11, for security reasons, the Speaker of the House was given a military plane. Denny Hastert had his, Nancy Pelosi deserves hers.
2.    Hastert was provided whatever military aircraft would get him to his district, without refueling. As Speaker, Pelosi deserves the same service.
3.    Pelosi’s California district is a whole lot farther from Washington than Illinois, so she needs a bigger plane.

That’s it. Period. Period. End of story!

Why does Adam Putnam, No. 3 House Republican, insist that Pelosi use a smaller plane that would require her to stop for fuel on every trip to California? Does he really think it helps the Republican Party to insult every resident of the largest state in the union?

Again, I don’t understand. Boehner and Putnam pursue the Pelosi plane at their party’s own political peril.

Please. Let the Air Force decide what plane Speaker Pelosi needs to get to California — and focus on the real issues.
